Teen Band from Melbourne on their way to London after winning round one of Red Bull Bedroom Jam

Welcome Wednesday from Melbourne’s eastern suburbs have rocked their way to victory at the Red Bull Backyard Jam event, held in Alice Springs on Saturday 7th May. The winners of the first round of the 2011 Red Bull Bedroom Jam competition will be heading to London in June to record in Red Bull’s state of the art studios, before performing the gig of a lifetime at legendary rock festival Download.

The four piece rock band conquered the Backyard Jam on Saturday after defeating over 350 other hopeful bands on the Buzz Chart and three other finalists on the day at a live gig in the Red Centre, alongside award winning Aussie garage rockers British India.

Welcome Wednesday’s lead vocalist and guitarist Max Roberts, 17, said ‘‘we can’t believe we’re going to London to record and play at Download! This is by far the biggest thing that’s happened for us as a band. We never thought we’d get this far so soon.”

British India took time out from their national tour to play their only date in the Northern Territory and help judge the Red Bull Bedroom Jam finalists. They sat alongside David Vodicka, Chairman of AIR and CEO of Rubber Records, Sarah Smith, Editor of Faster Louder and MTV host Daisy McHarg-McKenzie, on the industry judging panel.

The four finalists - songwriter Scott Boyd, garage band Jagged Lies and Welcome Wednesday, all from Melbourne, and electro thrash metal group The Sky’s The Limit from Alice Springs - battled it out to impress the judges before headliners British India took to the stage.

“It’s pretty awesome to be a part of something like Red Bull Bedroom Jam that is helping to nurture Aussie talent like Welcome Wednesday and give bands the confidence to tackle the industry,” said British India’s Declan Melia.

For bands itching to follow in Welcome Wednesday’s footsteps and get involved, there’s still time to be part of Red Bull Bedroom Jam.  The second round of the competition that will send one band to LA this September is now live!

Bands simply need to upload a video of an original track to www.redbullbedroomjam.com.au and spread the word to encourage their friends and fans to hop online and generate some noise.

RBBJ LOGO

mixitup has joined forces with Red Bull Australia to launch a new digital-based music competition, Red Bull Bedroom Jam.

The new platform provides young bands with unique opportunities to accelerate their musical ambitions and careers.

Red Bull Bedroom Jam allows young bands to upload original music videos to www.redbullbedroomjam.com.au to be watched by audiences who can determine the popularity of the music via a “Buzz Chart” embedded in the site. This clever piece of custom built technology ranks the top ten bands in real time based on their online activity across the Red Bull Bedroom Jam site, Myspace, Facebook and Twitter.

Ultimately the bands that generate the most "buzz" will get the chance to stream a live performance from their bedroom to the world, play in their very own backyard with a headline Aussie band and record in the Red Bull studios in Los Angeles. Any Australian band can enter as long as all members are between 14-19 years old.

The concept originated in the UK where Red Bull has been running the program successfully for three years. The first series will run in Australia from now until December. The initiative is scheduled to extend through to 2013.

mixitup is leading the project for Red Bull Australia and are joined by MEC (media agency), creative agency Kastner & Partners, Weber Shandwick (social media strategy) and Agency G (consumer PR).

Tom Sigelski, Culture Marketing Manager of Red Bull Australia explains: “This program is the perfect platform for any aspiring young band to get a foot on the music industry ladder and build a real fan base from their own bedroom. This is a unique opportunity that is not to be missed by budding musicians.”

Greg Segal, Director of mixitup said, “There are already 70 bands signed up from across Australia with active fan bases. The Red Bull Bedroom Jam Facebook page already has over 3,000 fans and we expect that to increase rapidly as word spreads.”

Downsyde Takes Out The 2009 Red Bull Soundclash!

12.10.2009

Redbull Soundclash Downsyde

It’s final. Hip hop heavyweights, Downsyde are the winners of the Red Bull Soundclash for 2009, beating indie rock sensation Little Red in a closely contested battle of the bands.  From one challenging round to the next, blow by blow, note by note, the unstoppable Downsyde finally defeated Little Red to claim the coveted trophy.

The energy at the UNSW Roundhouse was at its peak as fans streamed from the beer garden and into the Roundhouse for the second Soundclash event to hit Oz.  Channel V presenters Renee and Kyle proved to be a dynamic duo in hosting the innovative musical event, and with DJ Leeroy Brown of Katalyst on the decks, the excitement was undeniable.

When the bands finally took to their respective stages, the Roundhouse was filled to the brink and the 700-strong crowd brought the commotion.  The audience were transported from rock to reggae, house to hip-hop and ultimately decided who the winner was based on applause. The “decibel-meter” measured the sonic energy of the crowd by microphone, which was meticulously positioned from the ceiling. The results were then displayed on massive screens for all to see.

After a tight four-round contest it was hip-hop that reigned supreme with Downsyde taking out the trophy and with it, a place in Red Bull Soundclash history.

The competitive energy on stage was really more of a friendly rivalry, and the bands played this competition to perfection. The music was never-heard-before, jaw-dropping brilliance and the crowd appreciated every minute.

As the giant Red Bull Soundclash trophy was handed over to Downsyde, the two bands united on stage for a final performance of Bob Marley’s ‘Get Up, Stand Up’ to end the night. The fans suddenly found themselves cheering for both bands and there was no longer any sign of competition. Both bands certainly flexed their musical muscles and made sure nobody would forget this one-of-a-kind music event!

If you weren’t there to witness the action in person or just want to re-live the experience Channel [V] will be screening the 2009 Red Bull Soundclash on Sunday November 1st at 11.00am.

The Red Bull Stage at F1 Rocks Singapore

09.10.2009

Red Bull Stage at F1 Rocks! Sinagpore

It was a three day musical extravaganza in Singapore when some of the hottest up-and-coming artists in the world performed on the Red Bull Stage at the inaugural F1 Rocks Singapore music festival, held September 24th – 26th 2009.

Red Bull is certainly a brand that loves to do things differently, and in keeping with that ethos, mixitup created a truly unique design for the Red Bull Stage: shipping containers stacked on top of one another, against a backdrop of natural greenery at Fort Canning Park.

The outcome was a visual treat for fans, with its modern, raw industrial design and graffiti artwork. Some lucky fans even got the chance to enter the special VIP area atop a container for a direct view of the stage. A totally unique concert experience!

Brooklyn based rock band, Black Gold, headlined the stage, accompanied by UK beatbox extraordinaire Killa Kela and ZPYZ from Berlin. The supporting cast included Singapore’s very own Red Bull Music Academy alumni DJs Debbie Chia, Vijay Singh, Aresha and Sonicbrat, as well as popular local DJ Ko Flow. Completing the line-up was DJ Chris McGuiness from India, better known as the godfather of the Indian hip hop scene.

On-screen visuals were created by Singaporean VJ duo Achtung!Achtung (that’s German for Attention! Attention! in case you didn’t know) who have worked with Steve Aoki and The Rapture, amongst many others.

With Red Bull’s strong engagement with the Formula 1, and history of innovative music projects around the globe, the Red Bull Stage was a natural fit for a mega event like F1 Rocks!

Red Bull Soundclash First time in Australia!

12.12.2008

Redbull Sound Clash

Gloves became musical instruments and mouth guards became microphones last night as the Hordern Pavillion transformed into a musical boxing ring for the Red Bull Soundclash.  Rock and hip hop culture, complete opposites of the musical spectrum, went head to head exchanging blows for an entire evening in what was the musical bout of the century.

The Red Bull Soundclash has its roots deep in the tropical reggae sound system clashes of Jamaica, but trust Red Bull to give it a contemporary caffeinated twist, pitting bands of opposing genres against each other to create a unique clash of sound, style and creativity.

In one corner was TZU with a planned attack of beats and rhymes and in the other, The Vasco Era looking for salvation in the holy trinity of guitar, bass and drums.  The crowd, acting as referee, were plot in the middle of the two stages to actively judge each band’s musical prowess during the interactive musical performance.

The Vasco Era abided by all the artistic rules of the musical conversation to beat up their opponent, TZU in four rounds.  The ecstatic cheers of the crowd measured off the decibel-o-meter, leaving host Yumi Stynes no choice but to crown the Vasco Era as the Red Bull Soundclash King.

The extraordinary music contest set pulses racing, and left everyone’s eardrums ringing well into the night.

Click here to view the action from the inaugural event!

I wonder what musical genius will step into the ring in 2009 when the Red Bull Soundclash comes to town in October.  Be sure to find all the details here as soon as they are announced!!
